A language of his own

Painting is how Amoako speaks

Largely nonverbal, Amoako Buachie has found powerful forms of expression through painting, drawing, music and song. From the cartoons he began drawing as a child to portraits, landscapes and vividly imagined compositions, art has given him a language uniquely his own.

His work has taken him from school art competitions in New York City to national exhibitions and gatherings celebrating extraordinary artistic ability — and to a body of work now spanning more than two decades.

Beyond the canvas

Painting. Drawing. Piano. Singing. Movement.

Amoako plays piano and takes lessons at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, sings at karaoke every week, and explores movement through dance at the Mark Morris Dance Center. For someone who does not always communicate easily through spoken language, creativity has given him many other ways to be heard.
